Five Millfield athletes have progressed to the final stage of an exciting national programme aiming to discover the best talent in the UK.
‘#DiscoverYour Gold’ is a programme run by the English Institute of Sport and UK Sport in association with a range of national governing bodies for the sports involved.
The programme runs on a four-year cycle, in line with the Olympic cycle, and has five strands. #DiscoverYour ParaPotential, Freestyle, Giant, Power and Fight. All Millfield pupils were invited to apply by the Director of Sport and a total of 25 pupils reached phase 1.
The successful female pupils who have made it through to Phase 4 progressed through the #DiscoverYour Power pathway, which includes sports such as Track Cycling, Rowing, Skeleton and Canoe Sprint.
Over 1000 female athletes from across the country entered the process and were tested in phase 1, 30 girls progressed through to the physical assessments in phase 2, 10 girls were invited to weekend specific assessments in phase 3, with only six making it through to the 4th and final phase of the programme. Four of these are current pupils and another is Tait Jones, who is joining Millfield in September.
Sixth Form pupils Milly Tanner, Jody Edwards, Lauren Bell and Georgie McTear have been offered a six-month confirmation programme with GB Cycling, with Jodie Thomas reaching Phase 4 in rowing.
Old Millfieldian Rachel Goodwin has also taken part in the programme and is currently in Phase 3 of the canoeing pathway.
Jodie Thomas, also tried her hand at cycling during the process, but has progressed through the rowing element due to her strength and height.
After the six-month confirmation process, the girls will be given the opportunity to join British Cycling or GB rowing as full-time athletes if they choose.
The girls will continue to be supported by Milllfield’s Institute of Sport and Wellbeing and the Strength and Conditioning team, alongside their programmes with the Discover Your Power coaches.
